PRELUDE

WELCOME

RINGING OF THE BELLS

Opening Hynm . . . . . . . . . .
HOLY GOD, WE PRAISE THY NAME

Holy God, we praise Thy name;
    Lord of all, we bow before Thee.
All on earth Thy scepter claim,
    All in heav’n above adore Thee.
Infinite Thy vast domain,
Everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark! The glad celestial hymn
    Angel choirs above are raising;
Cherubim and seraphim,
    In unceasing chorus praising,
Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy Lord!

Lo, the_apostles’ holy train
    Join Thy sacred name to hallow;
Prophets swell the glad refrain,
    And the white-robed martyrs follow,
And from morn to set of sun
Through the Church the song goes on.

Holy Father, holy Son,
    Holy Spirit, three we name Thee;
Though in essence only one,
    Undivided God we claim Thee
And, adoring, bend the knee
While we own the mystery.

Pastor:     This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia.

All:     Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.

Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His.

This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

FIRST READING  . . . . . . . . .  Isaiah 45:1-7

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: “I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my
chosen, I call you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the Lord, who does all these things.

          READER:     This is the Word of the Lord.
          PEOPLE:     Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE  . . . . . . . . . .  1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received  the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an
example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

           READER:     This is the Word of the Lord.
           PEOPLE:      Thanks be to God.

SPOKEN:    “Glory to you O Lord”

GOSPEL  . . . . . . . . . .  MATTHEW 22:15-22

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle [Jesus] in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.
Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “
Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

SPOKEN:   “Praise to You O Christ”

Hymn of the Day  . . . . . . .
PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND

Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand;
    I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.
Through the storm, through the night,
Lead me on to the light.
    Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home.

When my way grows drear,
Precious Lord, linger near,
    When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call;
Hold my hand lest I fall.
    Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home.

When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
    And the day is almost gone,
At the river I stand;
Guide my feet, hold my hand,
    Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home.

SERMON

APOSTLES’ CREED

  I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
     who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
     born of the virgin Mary,
     suffered under Pontius Pilate,
     was crucified, died and was buried.
     He descended into hell.
     The third day He rose again from the dead.
     He ascended into heaven
     and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
     From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the holy Christian Church,
          the communion of saints,
     the forgiveness of sins,
     the resurrection of the body,
     and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven,
     hallowed be Thy name,
     Thy kingdom come,
     Thy will be done on earth
          as it is in heaven;
     give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses
          as we forgive those
          who trespass against us;
     and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
     and the power and the glory
     forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

CLOSING HYMN. . . . . . . . . . .
WE GIVE THEE BUT THINE OWN

We give Thee but Thine own,
    Whate’er the gift may be;
All that we have is Thine alone,
    A trust, O Lord, from Thee.

May we Thy bounties thus
    As stewards true receive
And gladly, as Thou blessest us,
    To Thee our firstfruits give!

The captive to release,
    To God the lost to bring,
To teach the way of life and peace,
    It is a Christ-like thing.

And we believe Thy Word,
    Though dim our faith may be:
Whate’er for Thine we do, O Lord,
    We do it unto Thee.
