ZELCOWA

ZELCOWA was started in 2002 as a mission to help indigent students and their families in Ghana, West Africa.  Since then, we have expanded our mission to provide libraries, science and math resource centers, counseling and micro-financing to those in need who wish to better themselves.  In addition, we intervene on behalf of young girls who were taken out of school and sent to work for and live with families.

We are a currently functioning as a tax exempt charitable organization in the US and are registered as a certified NGO (NON—GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION) in Ghana.  All staff works on a strictly volunteer basis, therefore over 90% of donations made go directly to the students’ school fees, building projects, resource rooms and recipients of our micro-financing grants.  

SCHOLARSHIP

At the end of their ninth year in school, students in Ghana must take a national test to determine if and where they will attend high school. Through our contacts in Ghana, we assist in the placement of some students.  High school is not free. If a student is assigned a school, they still must pay for their admission, tuition, books and supplies.  ZELCOWA sponsors students in order for them to obtain their Senior secondary school certificate.  Many or our students’ families are in the position of choosing between food/shelter and sending their children to school as their annual income is less than $400 a year. The majority of our recipients are girls.  It costs $100 a year to send a student to a vocational high school.  In other words, less than 30 cents a day will enable a student to learn a trade and provide for themselves in the future.
